NEW PRODUCT ALERT! Facial Tonic Oil

Facial Tonic Oil! A.K.A. Why am I putting oil on my face?

Especially for these dry months coming up, your face and hair will need moisture!  Facial Tonic Oil is an amazing mixture of grape seed oil, olive oil, meadow foam oil, wheat germ oil, red raspberry seed & cranberry fruit oils.  High in antioxidants and rejuvenating moisturizing ingredients, we are proud to say this oil is organically preserved and contains no artificial ingredients!

Here are some suggested uses for Facial Tonic Oil:

Facial cleansing for all skin types: Massage roughly a nickel sized amount into skin, remove with clean, warm washcloth. Tone and moisturize as needed.  Like attracts like, oils help gently cleanse pores and the motion of facial massage you're using to cleanse is great for your skin as well.  Hazzah.  Some oil washers have reported a week of slightly more breakouts as the skin purges impurities, then after that, much smoother sailing!

Moisturizing oil: Apply to skin as needed.  Especially useful after peel or exfoliation treatments, wheat germ oil stimulates tissue regeneration because it is rich in minerals, vitamins (especially vitamin E), and proteins.  Good for reducing wrinkles, eczema, psoriasis, scars and stretch marks.  I use this oil as a morning facial "mask", then wash it off in the shower.  Caution oils will stain clothing!!

Bath: A few pumps into a nice bath, not only relaxing but your skin will be soft and smooth! Be careful too much will make your bathtub slippery.

Shaving: Apply to skin for use as moisturizing shaving oil.

Hair Conditioning:  Add sparingly to hair to tame frizz & moisturize.

PS. Our new men’s Beard Oil is this oil blend + aromatherapy!

Joyful Spray + Your 3rd Chakra

Most people I've read have one issue or another with their 3rd chakra, approximately where your solar plexus is located.  Ego, self-esteem, the face you put out into the world and where guilt and shame for the "I could have, should have & would have..." live.  Maybe I have synesthesia and I smell colors, but the essential oil of Litsea Cubeba (also known as May Chang) smells bright yellow to me and since it stimulates and balances at the same time, it seems like a perfect match for unblocking the 3rd chakra.

Excellent for oily/combination/acneic skin types or for use as an aromatherapy pick me up when you need a little happiness boost. Joyful Spray is also one of the Okamura Farmacopia products featured on Channel 12!

Skin School's in Session! Fixing Summer Damage

This summer in Portland has been gorgeous!!  I must admit, for the first time since I was a kid, I purposefully got a tan and it felt amazing.  Now that we're a couple weeks into September it's time to undo some of the damage that has been done.

I started doing the 3 Peel Deal at Urbaca last fall because I wanted my clients to see what a regular series of 3 peels could do for their skin.  I did my peel right along with them, once a month for 3 months--I also used Okamura Farmacopia's Rose City Mask and AHA Cleanse at home to do light exfoliation in between treatments. Of course we are all wearing our sunscreen and antioxidants on a daily basis.  My clients and I loved the results!

What can peels do for you?  Basically, they lighten, tighten and brighten on a superficial level.  The down time is much less drastic than peels plastic surgeons/dermatologists perform.

The idea is doing light peels consistently as a preventative measure is a better strategy than one big peel.  Though nothing can stop the march of time, peels gently plane down the surface of skin, making wrinkles appear less deep.  It may take multiple series of peels to lighten dark spots/sun damage.

Fountain of youth?  Not exactly.  Beneficial? Definitely!

How Ingredients of a Peel Treatment Work

Why does a peel work?  The peels I use are a combination of glycolic, salicylic, mandelic, and lactic acids, with a little Retinol thrown in the mix.  Some of the peels use denatured alcohol to dissolve excess oils on the skin and aid penetration of the acids.

How do these ingredients work?

Glycolic acid comes from sugar cane and breaks down the glue between dead skin cells, aiding exfoliation.

Salicylic acid derived from the willow tree dissolves excess oil as well as softens keratin, making it an excellent ingredient for oily/acneic and ingrown-hair prone skin types.

Mandelic acid is made from almonds and also dissolves the glue between dead skin cells, more gentle than glycolic acid and useful for dark spots and acne.

Lactic acid comes from milk and is typically the most gentle of acids with the largest molecule size it doesn't penetrate as deeply but is still effective as an exfoliant and moisturizer.

Retinol is derived from Vitamin A and like its prescription cousin, Retin A, speeds sloughing of skin cells.
